There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, where casino wagering is not allowed. Eight casinos are based in a generally small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of restrictions constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are methods around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.
The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling den, contains 150 slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slot machine games and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machine games and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the common tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that features a number of luxuries aside from the gambling den, which has ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 tables.
